The 50 Druggiest Albums of All Time…

…as listed by the UK’s New Musical Express.

It’s a solid list; it just might be hampered by their apparent one-album-per-artist policy (I mean, you could really take all the Doors’ albums, no?). And within that restriction, I think Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed are arguably druggier than Exile, and Velvet Underground and Nico is probably druggier than White Light/White Heat, but I quibble.

What’s more interesting is whether their definition of “drugginess” is more informed by the artists’ substance use at the time of recording, or how famous a disc is for listeners taking drugs while they listen. For instance, the members of Pink Floyd in 1973 were not all that druggy. Yet I’d wager that exponentially more people have gotten high to Dark Side of the Moon than Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which they list. Which should matter more?

Props to them for including Neil Young’s On the Beach, perhaps the druggiest disc ever made by a guy not really known for drugs, and Sabbath’s stoner rock masterpiece, Master of Reality, complete with its ode to the herb, “Sweet Leaf.”
